Dental bonding is one of the most frequently used procedures for cosmetic dental treatments. While porcelain veneers can correct larger issues such as badly stained or misshapen teeth, the bonding process is a much faster and more affordable alternative for minor cosmetic issues. Completed in a single visit, with little to no preparation required, the bonding process is often performed without anesthesia. Common types of imperfections that a dental bond can fix include:
For those looking for an immediate fix to their less severe oral cosmetic issues, dental bonding may prove to be an effective solution.
Dental bonding is a straightforward process that is personalized for each of our patients. Prior to the start of the bonding procedure, our oral care staff determine the patient’s preferred cosmetic goal and begin prepping. After selecting a composite resin color that matches the shade of the patient’s other teeth, the dentist will slightly wear down the surface of the tooth, allowing the bonding solution to have a better hold, or bond, to the tooth. Once the solution is applied, the dentist will apply the resin and manipulate it until it is has taken the proper shape.
After the resin has been applied, an ultraviolet light is used to harden the material. Once it has been hardened, final touches are applied to ensure the new bond matches the surrounding teeth, and a polish is applied to the teeth to give them a healthy, polished look.
The bonding procedure typically lasts anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour and will typically provide several years of cosmetic benefits if maintained properly. Teeth-staining substances, such as tea, coffee, and cigarettes, should be avoided for the first 48 hours after a dental bonding procedure in order to prevent the resin from staining as it continues to set in. Normal dental hygiene processes should also be continued to ensure a clean and healthy mouth.
