Am I Too Old For Braces?

No one is ever too old for orthodontic treatment! Whether you’re 12 years old or 62 years old, braces can be for you — those metal braces aren’t just for teenagers. Having the perfect smile can be a lifetime goal of yours, no matter what your age. In fact, according to the American Association of Orthodontists, one in three patients with braces is an adult.

If you’re ready to achieve the smile of your dreams, the dentists at Thornton Park Dental Arts are here to help. Our team treats a wide range of dental issues using the latest orthodontic techniques. Benefits Of Adult Braces

Dental and orthodontic issues in adults can often come with a whole host of more serious dental health issues. Braces and other orthodontic options come with many benefits, including a better smile, an easier time eating food and swallowing, and can help alleviate or sometimes prevent the following issues. Treating dental problems with braces when appropriate, can significantly reduce your chances of needing dentures or implants in the future. • Gum Or Bone Loss
  • Chipped Or Missing Teeth
  • Gum Disease
  • Gastrointestinal Upset

Why Get Adult Braces?

There are many reasons to get adult braces. There’s no age limit on a beautiful smile, but Dr. Angulo and Dr. Miller recognize that adults come in for different reasons than children. Some of our adult patients come to us seeking orthodontic treatment to fix teeth that are crowded or spaced apart, often due to tooth decay or gum disease. Others want to alleviate pain or pressure from crooked teeth or a misaligned jaw. Many wish to correct a bad bite or malocclusion, which causes teeth to fit together incorrectly.

Types Of Adult Braces

We offer many different types of braces to fit our patients’ needs and lifestyles. No matter which style you choose, our dentists are here to help you achieve your dream smile. Contact us to learn more about all the different options available.

  • Ceramic braces. These are made of translucent or clear materials, making them very popular with adult patients.
  • Lingual braces. Like conventional metal braces, these are applied using metal brackets — but on the backs of a patient’s teeth instead of the front.
  • Invisalign®. These aligners are clear plastic trays that slip over teeth, similar in appearance to retainers. However, unlike retainers, Invisalign® braces must be worn regularly, except during meals and brushing — close to about 22 hours a day. Patients switch the aligners every two weeks as the teeth adjust.

What Makes Adult Braces Different?

While braces are suitable for both children and adults, braces for adults are much different. The advantage of early orthodontic treatment is that bones are still growing in children and teenagers, which makes them more malleable. In adults, some structural changes that previously could be accomplished by orthodontics in children can only be achieved by cosmetic and restorative dental procedures. It’s even more important for adult patients that their teeth and gums are healthy when they enter into orthodontic treatment and that any underlying gum disease is under control. Have questions? How Long Does Treatment Last With Adult Braces?

Unlike children, orthodontic treatment lasts longer on average for adult patients. The exact treatment time varies from patient to patient, but adult patients wear braces for approximately two years on average. During a consultation with one of our dentists, patients can discuss braces options with a doctor and get a treatment timeline. Your habits can impact your orthodontic care, so you must follow your orthodontist’s instructions for caring for your teeth while having braces.
